Steel coils, plate packages, rebar bundles, pipe strings and structural sections all share one characteristic during port handling: the final positioning moment requires a worker to guide the load into an exact position — on dunnage, on a trailer bed, into a vessel hold, or onto a rail wagon.

    Quayside Loading & Unloading
    Steel coils, plate packages, pipe strings, and structural sections discharged from or loaded onto vessels alongside the quay. Cargo is crane-lifted and must be guided into precise final position — often onto dunnage, flat-rack trailers or port handling vehicles. The hand guides the load at the moment it is still suspended.

    Vessel-Hold Cargo Placement
    Stowing steel cargo inside holds requires the load to be lowered into a confined, poorly-lit space and guided laterally into exact stow position. The worker inside the hold cannot step back — the load comes to them. Guiding by hand is the default, and the exclusion geometry is at its worst.

    Trailer & Rail-Wagon Loading
    Steel cargo lifted onto trailer beds or rail wagons must be aligned to bolsters, support saddles or coil cradles. The load descends toward a worker standing at deck level. At the moment of final touchdown, the worker's hand is between load and support — which is where the crush injury occurs.

    Stockyard Stacking & Retrieval
    Plate packages, billet packs, and coil rows stacked in port stockyards by overhead or gantry crane. Stacking requires precision placement with limited sightlines for the crane operator. The hand signals position, but often also enters the landing zone to guide the last 300 mm.

    Positioning on Dunnage & Saddles
    Heavy steel sections — pipes, tubulars, fabricated assemblies — lowered onto timber dunnage, steel saddles or coil cradles. The saddle is the pinch zone. As the load descends into the saddle seat, a worker's hand at the dunnage is exposed to full cargo weight. RiggerSafe® keeps the guiding hand outside the load's final path.

    Guiding Lifting Beams & Attachments
    C-hooks, coil lifters, spreader beams, and chain slings must often be guided onto the cargo or into alignment with the crane hook. The lifting attachment is suspended under load and swings freely. Guiding by hand places the worker's fingers in the pinch zone between the attachment and the cargo being lifted.

Short-reach control for guiding lifting attachments onto cargo — C-hooks, coil lifters, and spreader beam alignment. Sufficient exclusion distance for attachment-to-cargo contact operations where swing arc is limited.

Maximum exclusion distance for stockyard stacking, large structural sections, fabricated steel assemblies, and project cargo. Swinging or rotating loads where the hazard radius at touchdown is at its greatest. The operator stands well clear of the load's final arc.
Selection Principle
The reach is a control measure, not a matter of operator preference. Where there is doubt between two lengths, select the longer. The task remains equally controllable; the hand remains further from the hazard.

RiggerSafe® is not lifting equipment. It must not be used to lift, suspend, support, arrest, stop swinging cargo, restrain rolling coils, or carry load weight. The load must remain supported by the approved lifting system at all times. RiggerSafe® is a hands-off load-guidance tool — not a load-bearing rigging component and not a load-restraint device.
